What are kaomoji?

Kaomoji (顔文字, “face characters”) are Japanese emoticons built from text characters. Unlike Western smileys :) they are read upright, and the eyes do most of the work: (^_^) is happy, (T_T) is crying, (ಠ_ಠ) is a stare.

Because they are text, kaomoji keep their look in any app and never turn into an emoji picture. The most famous ones — the shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and the lenny face ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) — have their own guide.

Questions

How do you type kaomoji?

Japanese keyboards suggest them when you type a word like かお. Everywhere else, copying is the easiest way.

Why does a kaomoji look broken?

Some faces use rare characters (like ͜ʖ) that older phones show differently. The simple ones with ^ _ ◕ work everywhere.

What does ┻━┻ mean?

It is a table. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ is someone flipping a table in anger, and ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ) puts it back.
